Dead cactuses have been replaced with young Golden Barrel, Monstrosus, Mexican Fencepost and Mexican Bird of Paradise that Wiegand donated giving the formerly dried up entrance a fresh, well-cared-for look. Working with Gerald Paugh, Wiegand said, We cleaned up the wash, did a lot of weeding, moved rock and added new gravel and was proud to show off the newly planted areas on both sides of the Camino Encanto/Frontage Road entrance. Dennis and Karen Sakuma placed bird of paradise flowers from their Mililani yard yesterday on the grave of Shigeo "Joe" Takata, their uncle and a soldier in the famed 100th Infantry Battalion, who died in combat in Italy in 1943. It was part of their annual Memorial Day trek to the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl, a family tradition that began with Dennis Sakuma's mother, who was Joe Takata's sister.
